The centre houses tens of thousands of taonga and artefacts in secure, climate-controlled conditions, with dedicated spaces for conservation, research, and education. It plays a critical role behind the scenes, complementing the public-facing MTG Hawke’s Bay, and ensuring heritage items are professionally cared for and accessible into the future. Our Approach Gemco was engaged as lead contractor from the outset, managing the project from early site works through to final delivery. The build took place within an existing warehouse shell, requiring careful integration of complex mechanical systems, structural upgrades, and services. Our in-house teams – including construction, joinery, painting, and finishing trades – played a key role in delivering the specialised fit-out. The coordinated delivery approach ensured smooth progress and quality across all stages of the build, from structural work through to the custom joinery and installation of compact archival systems. Project Features Spanning 2,105 m², the centre is divided into two distinct zones. The “Lighthouse” – a two-level wing for staff, researchers, and visitors – is designed to be light-filled and welcoming. Incontrast, the “Darkhouse” provides high-security storage, with advanced temperature andhumidity controls, high-density mobile shelving, and strict environmental monitoring tomuseum standards. A central seismic gap separates the two wings, enhancing resilience inthe event of an earthquake. Externally, a striking six-metre feather-patterned aluminiumscreen symbolises the... --- Home Lindisfarne College About The Project Gemco undertook a significant renovation and restoration of the Lindisfarne office, affectionately known as the ‘homestead’. The project included earthquake strengthening and meeting the latest fire standards. Our Approach The building was stripped back to its core structure, which was a delicate process based on the deep heritage of the building. We recycled and reused as much of the original materials as possible, including native timber like rimu, preserving its original appearance. Work was completed in 2 stages, so as the building could remain operational. Project Features A meticulous renovation and restoration project with Gemco itemising every detail and returning it to its former glory. Heritage Despite the extensive renovations, the building had to be put back to look exactly as it looked before the refurbishment. Restored We recycled and reused as much of the original materials such as Rimu, decoratively featured as wall panels and the sweeping staircase. Texture Old school style, as well as Rimu providing elegance, so too the textured wallpaper and other intricate detailing of yesteryear. Gemco dedicated over five years to the rebuild and revitalisation of this landmark community facility. Our Approach An extensive redevelopment of three existing interconnected buildings including an open-air Plaza, the 3 storey Opera House and the Municipal Assembly Building. The plaza was replaced with a new fully enclosed venue, the Opera House was earthquake strengthened from 14% NBS to 75% NBS and the Assembly building was strengthened, rebuilt and fitted out for multiple tenancies, community spaces, kitchens, retail, hospitality and council offices. Project Features A complex project of building new as well as protecting heritage buildings that are landmarks within the Hastings CBD. Laneway A new laneway connects the buildings and is used for open space for community events and hospitality. Restored Detail was important in the restoration of the civic buildings. One important aspect was the stunning mosaic painted ceiling in the opera house. Precinct Toitoi now offers several hospitality offerings such as Cellar 495 and Craft & Social, that bring the precinct to life. The 18,950m2 state of the art winery positioned just off Hawke’s Bay’s expressway boasts tank cellar, barrel cellar, plant room, process room, press gallery, cellar door, offices, laboratory and amenities. Our Approach Gemco delivered the construction of New Zealand’s largest glass wall—standing 15 metres high and stretching 130 metres across the façade. Project Features Modern architecture that will stand the test of time, making a bold statement in the wine industry locally, nationally and internationally. Glass Wall A stunning statement of the winery is the 15 metre high and 130 metre long glass wall – the largest in NZ. Arched Roofline The arched style zinc roofline works in well with the open skyline. The development spans approximately 10,000 m² and has significantly enhanced the region’s healthcare capacity. As lead construction partner, Gemco has been involved from the outset, managing all aspects of the build from groundworks through to final fit-out. With services that were previously unavailable in Hawke’s Bay, the hospital now delivers high-quality, specialist care in a modern and patient-focused setting. Our Approach Gemco managed the full delivery of both stages, working closely with the client and design team to navigate a complex, live-site environment. Our in-house teams – including construction, joinery, painting, and finishing trades – were engaged throughout, ensuring consistent quality and seamless coordination. Stage 1 focused on surgical and recovery facilities, while Stage 2 introduced a range of expanded services, delivered alongside the operational Stage 1 hospital. Careful planning, staging, and clear communication were key to maintaining site safety and programme continuity. Project features Stage 1 comprised a 3,000 m², two-storey surgical facility with four operating theatres, full recovery areas, and ten inpatient rooms. The design prioritised patient wellbeing through the use of natural light, calming finishes, and visual connections to outdoor landscaping. Stage 2 added a 7,400 m² three-storey expansion, including a 31-bed ward, advanced imaging suite, cardiac catheterisation lab, and comprehensive cancer care centre. Built on 48 base isolators, it is the first hospital in Hawke’s Bay with seismic base-isolation. It is a world first for combining education, Māori world views, community engagement and place-making. It is a ‘wonder of water’ in a sustainable green space built around a state-of-the art drinking water treatment plant. Our Approach The education and civic centre was built featuring mass timber and glass. This project had significant mana whenua involvement with cultural elements and storytelling through design and construction of buildings as well as the landscaped setting which was designed around the land and sea narrative including formation of the 3 river ways and foreshore/ coastal region. Project Features The projects architectural elements throughout the building are very much featured into the landscaping works and cultural elements. Timber Many architectural features such as the exposed large, laminated mass timber structure using LVL, CLT and Glulam. Culture A strong Māori influence with Pou and Māori carvings crafted by talented mana whenua, all carefully positioned into place by Gemco. The complex won the 2024 NZIA Education Regional Award– Gisborne & Hawke’s Bay and the 2024 NZIA Awards: Resene Colour Award. Our Approach This was a project commissioned by the Ministry of Education, requiring it to meet specific requirements in functionality but also inspire learning. Project Features The striking exterior colour scheme, echoing the vibrant tones within each educational space, makes a bold architectural statement that reflects the school’s progressive approach. Colourful An exciting colour scheme both internally and externally that went on to win a Resene award. Acoustics Soundproofing, especially for the music room was a key consideration as was thermal efficiency requirements such as double-glazed windows. Over the years Mary Doyle has evolved to a full-service retirement village with more than 100 villas, 49 apartments, a 34 bed hospital wing and a 60 bed dementia wing. Our Approach Build quality has been a major priority as Mary Doyle has evolved over the last 20 years. The village overlooks the Karamu Stream and is on the edge of the popular Havelock North CBD. The 13. 9 hectare site has been a staged development – building new amenities along with ongoing refurbishment to modernise and enhance the comprehensive village. --- Home The Hastings Health Centre About the project A one-stop health and urgent care campus, The Hastings Health Centre is one of the most advanced primary health care facilities in the country, providing thousands of patients better access to a range of health services including urgent and after hour medical care, radiology, laboratory, dentist, physiotherapy as well as a central café in one easy to access central location. Our Approach This was an extensive and complex architectural build with 3200 tonne of concrete, 162 tonne of structural steel and 3400 sheets of plasterboard. The key to delivering this project on time with the partnership with consultants and the client from the outset. Early engagement ensured better planning of each stage of the build. Our Approach There was a lot to consider with the expanse of the kitchen, keeping the scullery open along with a long and narrow window above the main kitchen bench. Project Features The kitchen features a colour-matched splashback enhancing the view, a dramatic charcoal scullery backdrop, and a minimalist island that lets the benchtop shine. Feature 1 The window placement and associated view led to the choice of wall coloured splashback. Feature 2 A charcoal splashback in the scullery offers a dramatic backdrop to the stainless appliances and chrome tapware. Feature 3 The island has no timer or stainless accents which allows the benchtop to be the hero piece. This is a beautiful, bright kitchen with a range of user friendly features. Project Features A balance of texture and elegance with wood-grain laminate cabinetry, a sleek 20mm Caesarstone benchtop, and a cleverly concealed built-in ironing board. Feature 1 Designed with texture to compliment the bright white floor to ceiling cabinetry. The low pressure wood grain laminate cupboards do this nicely and add warmth to the kitchen. Feature 2 A 20mm engineered Caesarstone benchtop – which is half the size of a standard 40mm thick bench top giving it a refined streamlined look. Feature 3 Cleaver design that gets the best out of the space with a built in ironing board under the bench. Our team were able to do a lot of setting out to show examples of what the finished concept looked like. Our Approach A lot of time spent in the planning process meant the client was extremely happy with the end result. Project Features This kitchen showcases a granite island, Corbel shelf detailing, and an internal vacuum system, blending style, storage, and effortless cleanliness. Feature 1 A feature is the granite island bench top with Wilson Art High Definition Laminate for the remaining bench spaces. Feature 2 Beautiful Corbel detailing can be found under the shelf that sits above the range hood – providing extra space and storage. To make life a little easier, an internal vacuum system was installed – a simple sweep to the outlet is all it takes to help the floor spotless. Our Approach The plywood, steel and engineered stone fuse together effortlessly to bring a raw, industrial and moody feel to this area. Project Features Combining industrial style with bold design, featuring half-width drawer handles, black-stained plywood cabinetry, stainless steel worktops, and an elegant stone breakfast bar. Feature 1 The client wanted something eye catching yet unobtrusive, so opted for handles that were cut half the width of the drawer and able to be easily opened. Feature 2 The cabinetry was made from plywood and stained black. It’s striking, bold colour brings out the industrial and moody feel to the kitchen. Feature 3 To keep with the industrial styling a stainless steel bench top in the work areas and a beautiful engineered stone for the breakfast bar. Having the same styling and design throughout the three areas created a stylish space full of beautiful design features. Showcasing under bench, under cupboard and lighting around the floor, working in the dark is a thing of the past. Knowing what worked and didn’t work with their last kitchen, and having provided a mock-up sketch made for a breezy design process. With the brief given for no handles, clean lines, and bright white cabinetry, our joinery team got together and delivered a stunning kitchen. Our Approach The project enhances the local streetscape and anticipates, through the inclusion of a lively laneway, future development in the neighbourhood. Clean, crisp forms, complemented by subtle variations in colour, offer contemporary appeal while alluding to the vernacular architecture of the surrounding rural district. Project Features Our brief was to deliver a ‘wow’ modern kitchen with no handles, clean lines, and bright white cabinetry. Feature 1 Routered cupboard handles and ‘shark nose’ finger pull draws are a design feature. Feature 2 Under-bench lighting in the island unit and under their over cupboards. Our Approach We have undertaken a vast and varied amount of works at Woodford House; a school with rich history and roots deeply established in Hawkes Bay. Utilising an L shape floor plan to take advantage of the sun position during the day, spilling light in through the vast number of windows and glass doors adorning the building. Our Approach Clad with a grey Rockcote finish, Zincalume features, and galvanised steel structural members to create a modern home a modern, with an industrial exterior influence with the interior, a contrast with a warm, homely feel with the rich colour choices, and warm wooden flooring. Our Approach A focus on quality to ensure the village lasts the test of time. --- Home Napier War Memorial Confernce Centre About the project A seaside purpose-built conference and events facility floating above Marine Parade is Napier’s War Memorial Conference Centre, an iconic building that captures the equally iconic setting with expansive views across to Cape Kidnappers. Proudly partnered with Napier City Council. Our Approach The project encompassed demolition to parts of the existing building along with adding two extensions - a circular ballroom and exhibition hall. The building required earthquake strengthening throughout as well as renovations to the existing building. One of the biggest challenges during the project was the weather – combatting strong winds and sea spray and protecting the existing interior. Spread across 20 hectares of mature trees and on a tiered greenfield site is Te Awa Lifecare Village offering villa living and care support living. Our Approach We have a close working relationship with the developer, creating retirement villages that offer the best quality in senior living. --- Home Hawke’s Bay Regional Sports Park Grandstand About the project Showcasing regional, national and international sporting talent, Hawke’s Bay boasts one of the finest examples of a multi-sport facility in New Zealand. At the heart of the facility is the athletics and playing field precinct where thousands of supporters can enjoy the sporting action in front of them. Our Approach This was a complex project from the outset. The design of the curved grandstand required the precise placement of 14 concrete panels with exceptionally minimal tolerances. Project Features As a public amenity , the grandstand is built to last. Within the grandstand are amenities such as bathrooms, changing facilities, offices and storage facilities as well as internal staircase. Captured Views A curved design that captures the action across all parts of the track and field and views to Te Mata Peak. Easy Access An internal and external staircase as well as a viewing platform to the hockey turfs behind the grandstand. Quality Amenities Large modern changing rooms for athletes and volunteers equally matched with amenities for spectators and supporters. The stunning multi-purpose complex on Napier’s Marine Parade is a blend of modern contemporary architecture and careful refurbishment of existing buildings. Our Approach Gemco spent 2 years delicately building new while rebuilding heritage listed buildings originally designed by two of Hawke’s Bay’s most prominent architects – Louis Hay of the 1930s and Guy Natusch from the 1960s. First opened in 1861, the hotel once hosted Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip and is regarded as the Grand Dame of Hawke’s Bay hospitality. Our Approach We had our work cut out transforming a tired hotel bar into one that would rival the roaring 1920s. An eye for detail was paramount, with Art Deco detailing taking centre stage. The Te Manga Māori Studies complex is the symbolic gateway to EIT’s campus. Extensive research was undertaken prior to the build to identify and evaluate the best teaching models and facilities. The outcome was a flexible open-plan layout to accommodate carpentry, panel beating, automotive, gas welding and machinery and fabrication workshops. Our Approach Designed and constructed to high environmental standards, this buildings key features include a high specification mechanical extraction system to ensure excellent interior air quality in the workshops, efficient energy use, waste recycling systems, water conservation, use of natural lighting and renewable building products. Built in Havelock North’s newest subdivisions, the client wanted to push the boundaries of what’s ‘normal’, creating not only a visual masterpiece, but a home that brought a ‘rural’ feel into the urban area. Our Approach Boasting its own small vineyard, a barn inspired exterior and future proofed so that future internal alterations wouldn’t require council consents, this was certainly an interesting and exciting build for Gemco. --- Home Cosmopolitan House About the project Well positioned with breathtaking views on Marine Parade, the 1960s Cosmopolitan Club has made way for a contemporary three level complex with commercial offices and a popular café. Our Approach Extensive seismic strengthening, use of patterned precast concrete, light enhancing glass panels and a wood veneer exterior fuse together to create a modern finish. The complete refurbishment of an historic two storey boutique hotel and its cottages with extensive internal and external remodelling. The modernisation of the buildings meets today’s guests more discerning tastes. Mangapapa, on the outskirts of Havelock North won Best New/Redeveloped Accommodation in the Hospitality NZ Awards 2016. Our Approach The three different work areas were completed ahead of schedule required exceptional planning.
